Giant Magnetic Pattern Blocks — geometry supersized
Hexagon, trapezium, rhombus, triangle, square and thin rhombus: the Giant Magnetic Pattern Blocks by Learning Resources are the classic pattern blocks — just three times as big and magnetic. With an edge length of 7.5 cm the 47 pieces stick to whiteboards, magnetic boards or the fridge door and are easy to see from the back row. Children from age 4 build patterns, animals and stars, discover symmetry and see that six triangles take up exactly as much space as one hexagon.
What's in the set
- 47 magnetic shapes in six forms and colours: yellow hexagons, red trapeziums, blue rhombuses, green triangles, orange squares, tan thin rhombuses
- Edge length 7.5 cm — proportional to standard pattern blocks (three times the side length, nine times the area)
- Colour-coded like the familiar pattern blocks so textbook tasks transfer directly
What children learn
Recognising and naming shapes, continuing patterns, composing and decomposing areas, finding lines of symmetry, congruence and first fraction ideas (a trapezium is half a hexagon) — pattern blocks accompany children from nursery to upper primary. Because the pieces are large and easy to grip, they suit younger children and demonstrations in front of a group particularly well.
Who is the set for?
Nurseries, primary schools, intervention groups and families with a magnetic board or whiteboard. Recommended from age 4; no small parts.
Frequently asked questions
How many pieces per shape? 47 pieces in six shapes in total; the smaller shapes are more numerous so that the hexagon can be built from triangles, rhombuses or trapeziums.
Do they match normal pattern blocks? In colour and proportion yes — the giant version is exactly three times as long per side; mixing them on one surface doesn't work because of the size difference.
Do they stick to the fridge? Yes, to any magnetic surface.
Tips & tricks
- Continue the pattern: start a row (triangle, square, triangle …) — children carry on.
- Mirror image: lay one half, children mirror it across the axis.
- How many triangles? Cover a hexagon with triangles, rhombuses and trapeziums — the way into fractions.
