3 × 4 = 12? With the Giant Magnetic Array Set by Learning Resources the abstract sum becomes a picture: two magnetic 5×5 grids stick to any magnetic surface — whiteboard, fridge, magnetic board — and are filled with coloured discs. Three rows of four discs, and children see that multiplication is nothing more than repeated addition and division works as repeated subtraction. The arrays measure around 25 × 25 cm — big enough for the whole class (or the family at the kitchen table) to follow.
- 2 magnetic 5 × 5 arrays (approx. 25 × 25 cm each)
- 50 magnetic discs in two colours (orange and purple)
- Activity guide with task ideas, multilingual packaging
Arrays are the key image for times tables in primary school: rows and columns show the two factors, the total number of discs the product. With two colours you can partition sums (4 × 6 = 4 × 5 + 4 × 1), show commutativity (3 × 4 turned round looks like 4 × 3) and set out division problems. Area, odd and even numbers and square numbers also become tangible on the grid.
Teachers of Years 2–4, parents who want to help with times tables, and tutoring or intervention groups. Recommended from age 7; the discs are small parts.
How big are the arrays? Around 25 × 25 cm (9.75 in), easily visible from a few metres away.
Do the pieces stick to any whiteboard? To all magnetic whiteboards and boards; not to glass or plastic surfaces without a metal core.
Are 50 discs enough? Filling both arrays completely takes exactly 50 — ideal for two separate problems side by side.
- Partitioning: lay out tricky facts like 7 × 6 as 5 × 6 + 2 × 6 — instantly visible with the two colours.
- Inverse: show a finished array and ask "Which divisions are hiding in here?"
- At home: the fact of the day stays on the fridge.
Age: 7+. Warning: contains small parts, not for children under 3. Brand: Learning Resources.
