Spike the Fine Motor Hedgehog is a posting toy for toddlers: a blue and brown hedgehog with a purple nose and twelve colourful quills that slot into the holes in his back. Red, orange, yellow, green, purple and pink quills sit on the table, and each one has to be picked up, turned the right way round and pushed into place. That single movement is exactly the fine motor practice little hands need later for drawing, doing up buttons and writing.

Spike measures 15 cm. Multilingual play ideas come with the set, so you have something to do with the quills from the very first session, from naming colours to counting out loud. If you like Montessori-style toys, the idea here will feel familiar: one simple action, one clear task, a result the child can see straight away. As a learning toy from 18 months on, Spike suits the playroom, the playgroup and the nursery.

Spike brings everything you need to start: the hedgehog body in blue and brown with a purple nose, plus twelve quills in six colours. The set has 14 pieces in total.

  • Spike the hedgehog, 15 cm
  • 12 quills to post into his back
  • Quill colours red, orange, yellow, green, purple and pink
  • Hedgehog body in blue and brown with a purple nose
  • 14 pieces in total
  • Multilingual play ideas
  • Quills store inside the hedgehog
  • Recommended for ages 18 months and up

The holes in Spike's back each take one quill. Your child picks up a quill, turns it to line it up and presses it in, then pulls it out again moments later, because taking them out is just as satisfying as putting them in. Every round makes the movement a little finer. The quills store inside the hedgehog, so tidying up becomes part of the game.

Because the quills come in several colours, the game quickly grows with your child. You can sort by colour, count together how many quills are already in place, or ask for the yellow one in particular. Spike develops fine motor skills, colour recognition, counting and sorting by attribute, all through play, with no screen and no rules a toddler has to learn first.

Recommended for ages 18 months and up, the stage when children want to grab everything, post it somewhere and take it apart again. Parents and grandparents looking for a quiet fine motor toy are in the right place, and so are playgroups and nurseries, where several children use the same material in turn. As a gift, Spike is a classic for a first or second birthday, for Christmas, for Easter or as a small present.

Sit down with your child the first time and post one quill yourself; most children take over from there. Say the colour you are holding as you do it, so the word and the object go together. Later a small task is enough: all the red quills first, then all the green ones.

When play is over the quills go back inside Spike's tummy, so nothing is left lying around and the set is complete next time. In a playgroup, counting the twelve quills back in makes tidying easy. If you are after more of the same, Dottie and Helping Hands make good companions.
