How to Grow Your Ginkgo Bonsai
- Prepare the seeds: Carefully scarify the seed coat (sandpaper/file), then soak in water for 12–24 hours
- Stratification: Wrap seeds in moist kitchen paper, place in a plastic bag with air holes and store in the fridge for 2–3 months (1–5 °C)
- Sowing: After the cold treatment, press about 1 cm deep into moist soil
- Keep warm: Place at 18–24 °C in a bright spot
- Patience: Germination after 3–8 weeks (can take up to 2 years!)
What is stratification? Many tree seeds need a simulated winter before they germinate. The fridge mimics the natural cold period.
About the Ginkgo biloba
The Ginkgo is a living fossil – the last surviving species of a family that originated 270 million years ago. Its unique fan-shaped leaves turn a spectacular golden yellow in autumn. In Asia it is revered as a temple tree and symbol of strength. Goethe dedicated a famous poem to it. A Ginkgo even survived the atomic bomb at Hiroshima!
