Bring the scent of the Mediterranean into your home! With the Bonsai Kit Umbrella Pine you can grow a real Pinus pinea – the iconic Mediterranean pine with its distinctive umbrella-shaped crown – as a miniature tree.
- Umbrella Pine seeds (Pinus pinea)
- Growing soil / substrate
- Growing pot
- Step-by-step instructions
- Prepare the seeds: Soak seeds in lukewarm water for 12–24 hours
- Sowing: Press seeds about 1 cm deep into the moist growing soil
- Keep warm: Place in a bright, warm spot (20–25 °C)
- Wait for germination: The first seedlings appear after 1–2 weeks
- Care: Keep the soil evenly moist, avoid direct midday sun
Good to know: The Umbrella Pine is a warm germinator – no stratification (cold treatment) needed! This makes it particularly beginner-friendly.
The Pinus pinea shapes the coastal landscapes of Italy, Spain and Greece. In the wild it grows 25–30 metres tall and develops the characteristic flat umbrella crown. As a bonsai it stays compact and brings Mediterranean flair to any windowsill or terrace. Fun fact: its cones contain the edible pine nuts (pinoli) that you know from Italian cuisine!
- Location: Sunny to semi-shaded, happy outdoors in summer
- Watering: Regular but no waterlogging. Use well-draining substrate
- Fertilising: From spring to autumn every 2 weeks with bonsai fertiliser
- Overwintering: Cool at 3–10 °C, protect from frost
- Repotting: Every 2–3 years in spring
Do I need prior experience?
Not at all! The kit includes everything plus instructions. The Umbrella Pine is ideal for beginners thanks to its straightforward germination.
How big will the bonsai grow?
As a bonsai it stays as small as you keep it – through regular pruning and the small pot. In nature it would grow to 25–30 m!
Is the kit suitable as a gift?
Absolutely! The kit comes in attractive packaging and makes an original, sustainable gift for plant lovers, meditation fans and anyone looking for something unique.
When is the best time to sow?
Year-round indoors at room temperature (20–25 °C). Outdoors in spring (April–May).
