Growing Guide: The Three Climbing Plants
Morning Glory (Ipomoea purpurea)
Morning glory opens its trumpet-shaped blooms in vivid blue, violet or pink every single morning. Soak seeds overnight in lukewarm water, then press 1 cm into the moistened coconut soil. Germinates in 5–8 days. Climbs up to 3 metres and needs a support (string, trellis or railing). Full sun, water regularly.
Nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus)
The all-rounder: edible flowers and leaves with a peppery kick, vibrant orange and yellow blooms, and virtually indestructible. Press seeds 2 cm into the soil. Germinates in 7–12 days. Climbs up to 2 metres and doubles as a ground cover. Loves sun to partial shade. Don't over-fertilise – poor soil produces more flowers.
Sweet Pea (Lathyrus odoratus)
Sweet pea enchants with its intense, sweet fragrance and delicate pastel blooms. Soak seeds overnight before sowing (speeds germination). Sow 2 cm deep; germinates in 10–15 days. Climbs up to 2 metres on strings or trellises. Likes cool roots and warm tops – mulch the base. Remove spent blooms regularly so the plant keeps producing new ones.
Support Structures: What Works?
- Strings or ribbons: Simplest option – stretch from balcony railing upwards. Ideal for morning glory and sweet pea.
- Wooden or metal trellis: Sturdy and decorative, perfect for all three plants.
- Existing structures: Fences, railings or even washing lines work beautifully.
- Tip: The pots are your starting point – repot into larger containers (3+ litres) or plant in the ground after 4–6 weeks.
Tips for Abundant Blooms
- Sowing: April to May (outdoors after last frost). Indoor pre-sowing from March on a windowsill.
- Light: All three plants love sun. At least 5–6 hours of direct light per day.
- Flowering: June to September – colourful blooms all summer long.
- Edible: Nasturtium flowers and leaves are entirely edible with a delicious peppery flavour. Morning glory and sweet pea are not edible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do the plants need a climbing support?
Yes, all three are climbers and need something to grip. Simple strings or a balcony railing work perfectly.
Can I grow them indoors?
Start them on a windowsill from March. Long-term, they need an outdoor setup (balcony, terrace, garden) for full flowering.
How tall do they climb?
Morning glory up to 3 m, nasturtium and sweet pea up to 2 m each. In the small terracotta pots they stay more compact.
