The Dancing Plant Growing Kit lets you cultivate one of nature's true wonders. The Telegraph Plant (Codariocalyx motorius) is one of the few plants on Earth whose movements are visible in real time — no time-lapse needed! Its small leaflets rotate, circle and sway in response to sound, warmth and light. A mesmerising gift for kids, music fans and plant enthusiasts.

Growing Guide: How to Sow

  1. Soak seeds: Place in warm water (30 °C) for 24 hours to soften the hard shell.
  2. Prepare soil: Soak the included coconut soil disc in warm water until fully expanded. Drain excess water.
  3. Sow: Press soaked seeds 5 mm into the moist coconut soil and cover lightly.
  4. Germination: Keep at 25–30 °C. Cover with cling film for humidity. Seeds sprout in 14–21 days.
  5. After sprouting: Remove film, place in bright indirect light. Keep soil consistently moist.

The Secret Behind the Dance

The leaflet movement — called nyctinasty — is powered by special joints (pulvini) at the base of each leaf. The small side leaflets complete one full rotation in about 3 minutes. Movement is strongest with:

  • Warmth: Most visible above 25 °C
  • Sound: Music, clapping or loud tones stimulate the leaves
  • Light: Bright, indirect light boosts activity

Pro tip: Play bass-heavy music — the leaflets respond especially well to vibrations!

FAQ

Does it really dance?
Yes! The small leaflets move visibly in real time. One rotation takes about 3 minutes. Best seen at temperatures above 25 °C.

Why isn't my plant moving?
Most likely too cold. Below 22 °C, movement is barely visible. Give it more warmth and light.

Is it safe for children?
Absolutely. Non-toxic and fascinating to observe — a perfect nature experiment for kids.
