Plant a living fossil! The Ginkgo biloba is one of the most fascinating trees on Earth — its species has existed for over 250 million years. Dinosaurs already knew this tree. It survived ice ages, volcanic eruptions, and even the atomic bomb in Hiroshima (6 ginkgo trees resprouted afterwards). With these seeds, you can start your own piece of Earth's history.

Growing Guide: How to Sow

  1. Stratification: Place the seeds in moist sand and keep in the fridge for 4–8 weeks (4–5 °C). This simulates winter and is essential for germination.
  2. Sowing: After cold treatment, plant seeds about 2 cm deep in seed compost.
  3. Temperature: Place at around 20 °C. Bright but without direct sunlight.
  4. Germination: Takes 4–8 weeks after stratification. Keep evenly moist.
  5. First shoot: The unmistakable fan-shaped leaves emerge — one of the most beautiful leaf forms in the entire plant kingdom.

Care Tips

  • Fully hardy: Yes! Ginkgo is hardy down to -25 °C, making it one of the few exotic trees that can stay outdoors year-round in Switzerland.
  • Location: Sun to partial shade. Tolerates almost any soil, even city air and road salt.
  • Growth: Slow but steady — typical for a tree that can live for thousands of years. Expect 20–40 cm per year.
  • Autumn colour: Spectacular golden-yellow foliage in October/November. The leaves often fall within just a few days — a golden carpet!
  • Container growing: Works beautifully for years. Also popular as bonsai.
