Forget bland supermarket basil. With the Mini Herb Greenhouse you can grow six fresh organic herbs on your own windowsill in just a few weeks – basil, red basil, parsley, chives, dill and thyme. The complete growing kit brings Mediterranean aroma straight into your kitchen and costs less than three bunches of cut herbs from the shop.
The set contains six small terracotta pots, six coir swelling pellets, six packets of open-pollinated organic seeds and a clear propagator hood made of recycled plastic. The hood creates a constantly humid, warm microclimate – perfect for fast and reliable germination. No expert knowledge needed: a four-language step-by-step guide walks you through every stage from sowing to first harvest.
The herbs you will grow
- Basil (green): the classic for pesto, caprese and tomato sauce. Sweet, savoury, intensely aromatic.
- Basil (red): spicier and slightly clove-like, decorative in salads and on pizza.
- Parsley: flat or curly leaf – fresh, mineral, the all-rounder of European cuisine.
- Chives: mildly oniony, perfect for quark, eggs, soups and cream-cheese spreads.
- Dill: sweet-aniseed, indispensable with salmon, cucumber, potato and pickled vegetables.
- Thyme: Mediterranean, woody, herbal. Roasts, stews and bakes well – pairs with meat, vegetables and bread.
Sowing and care – step by step
- Activate the pellets: place the coir pellets in the pots and add lukewarm water. Within minutes they swell into loose substrate.
- Sow: press 3-5 seeds about 0.5 cm into the moist soil per pot. Firm down and water lightly.
- Place the hood: creates the necessary humidity. Position in a bright, warm spot (windowsill, 18-22 °C).
- Germination (3-14 days): different herbs sprout at different speeds. Chives and parsley take longest, basil shortest.
- Remove the hood: as soon as seedlings touch the hood, take it off. Ventilate daily, water regularly without waterlogging.
- First harvest: after about 3-4 weeks you can cut the first shoots. Always remove only one third of the plant so it keeps growing.
Perfect for city flats, families and gifts
The set is compact and space-saving (15 × 20 × 22 cm) and fits on any windowsill, kitchen counter or desk. It is a wonderful family project – kids love watching things grow. And it is an original gift for hobby cooks, students moving into their first flat, plant lovers, housewarmings, Mother's Day, Father's Day or simply a thoughtful surprise for anyone who wants to liven up their kitchen.
Sustainably designed
The producer focuses on Made in France, open-pollinated organic varieties without hybrid manipulation, recycled plastic for the hood, biodegradable coir pellets and reduced-plastic packaging. The terracotta pots remain reusable for years after the kit – for succulents, cuttings or other herbs from your own seed harvest.
Tips for lush, lasting herbs
- Location: sunny to partly shaded, at least 4 hours of daylight. Avoid direct midday sun in high summer (risk of scorching).
- Watering: small amounts regularly, never waterlogged. Finger test: press the soil 1 cm deep to check.
- Feeding: after 4-6 weeks add a small amount of organic liquid fertiliser. Herbs do not like rich feeding.
- Pruning: cut basil above a pair of leaves – it grows back bushy. Cut parsley from the outside so the centre keeps producing.
- Repotting: when pots become too small (after 6-8 weeks), transfer to larger containers (15-20 cm diameter). You will harvest all summer long.
- Preserving: freeze surplus in ice-cube trays with olive oil or process into pesto.
Frequently asked questions
When can I sow?
All year round indoors on the windowsill. Spring (March-May) and summer offer the fastest growth thanks to longer days.
How long until the first harvest?
Basil can be cut after about 3-4 weeks, parsley and thyme need 4-6 weeks, dill and chives are in between.
Do I need special soil or fertiliser?
No. The coir pellets are enough for the first weeks. For longer cultivation we recommend organic liquid fertiliser or repotting into organic herb compost.
Are the seeds organic?
Yes, all 6 seed varieties are organically grown and open-pollinated – you can save your own seed for the next generation.
Does it work without a garden?
Yes. The set is designed exactly for that: compact, indoor, low-effort. A sunny windowsill is enough.
How do I care for the herbs in winter?
Bright spot near the window, less watering, no cold draughts. If light is too low, use an inexpensive LED grow light – it extends the harvest by weeks.
Does it make a good gift?
Absolutely. With its premium, low-plastic packaging and detailed booklet, it is a thoughtful gift – also suitable for shipping.
