Basil Organic Growing Kit in Terracotta Pot 13 cm — fresh organic basil straight from your own pot. This charming growing kit by Radis et Capucine comes in an authentic terracotta pot in vintage Antique style and contains everything you need for your own basil harvest.
Basil is the all-round herb of Mediterranean cuisine — aromatic, versatile and surprisingly easy to care for. Instead of buying supermarket pots that wilt after a few days, you raise your own strong plant from organic seeds. «Grand Vert» is the classic Italian variety with large, intensely fragrant leaves and dense, dark green foliage.
Simply rehydrate the coconut soil pellets with water, sow the seeds and water regularly. After just a few weeks you can harvest fresh basil leaves for pasta, pesto, pizza, caprese or cocktails. The pretty clay pot remains a decorative eye-catcher on your windowsill even after the harvest and can be replanted again and again — with chives, parsley or mint.
How to sow successfully
- Rehydrate the coconut soil: Pour 5–6 times the volume of water over the three pellets and let them swell for about 10 minutes.
- Fill the pot: Distribute the moist soil evenly in the terracotta pot and press lightly. Leave about 1 cm to the rim.
- Sow: Scatter 2–3 basil seeds on the surface and press gently (basil is a light germinator — do not cover!).
- Moisten: Mist regularly with a spray bottle without soaking the soil. Rainwater or stale tap water is ideal.
- Location: Bright spot behind glass, later in full sun. Optimal: 18–25 °C, no draughts.
- Thin out: As soon as the seedlings are 5 cm tall, keep only the strongest one and gently pull out the others or transplant them to a second pot.
Germination and harvest
- Germination: 5–10 days in a warm spot
- First harvest: after about 3 months — pluck the leaves rather than cut them
- Care tip: Remove flower shoots immediately — this keeps the aroma strong and the plant produces more leaves
- Lifespan: Basil is annual — collect seeds in autumn for next season
Tips for maximum aroma
- Harvest in the morning, when essential oil content is highest
- Always pinch off entire shoot tips above a pair of leaves — this makes the plant branch out and grow bushy
- Basil dislikes waterlogging — little and often is better than rare and lots
- Tear fresh leaves at the edge of the plate, do not cut them — knives turn leaves dark
- After thinning out, replant the removed seedlings in a second pot — double the yield
- Basil loves tomatoes as neighbours — their essential oils repel pests together
FAQ
Are the seeds really organic?
Yes, the «Grand Vert» basil is from certified organic farming (FR-BIO-01). No pesticides, no chemicals, no seed coating.
Can the pot go outside?
Yes, from May on it loves the balcony or terrace. Below 10 °C bring it indoors — basil is frost-sensitive and reacts to cold with black leaves.
How long does a basil pot last?
With good care a plant provides 3–4 months of fresh leaves. Collect seeds in late summer and sow again in spring.
Is the kit suitable as a gift?
Perfect! The pretty vintage-style packaging makes every kit a small present — ideal for hobby cooks, garden fans or as a hostess gift.
What pairs with basil?
Tomatoes and mozzarella (Caprese), Pesto alla Genovese, Pizza Margherita, pasta sauces, strawberry salad with balsamic, aperitifs such as basil lemonade or a Gin Smash with fresh lime.
