Grow your own peanuts at home — sounds wild? That's exactly what makes the Peanut Growing Kit "I'm Bringing the Snacks" by Radis et Capucine so much fun! The witty gift box is the perfect party favour, housewarming gift, or treat for anyone who enjoys trying something new.

This complete kit includes a terracotta pot with a fun inscription, coconut substrate and viable peanut seeds. By Radis et Capucine, French seed specialists since 1927, hand-packed in Anjou.

The Wow Factor: How Peanuts Actually Grow

Peanuts aren't actually nuts — they're legumes, and they grow in a truly fascinating way. The plant first produces pretty yellow flowers above ground. After pollination, something incredible happens: the flower stalk (called a "peg") bends downward and pushes into the soil. There, underground, the peanut pods develop! This process is called "pegging" — and it's absolutely mesmerising to watch.

Growing Guide: Step by Step

  1. Prepare substrate: Soak coconut tablets in 5–6 times their volume of water.
  2. Prepare seeds: Shell the peanuts carefully. Soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours.
  3. Sow: Plant seeds 3–5 cm deep in moist substrate. Start in the terracotta pot, transplant later into a larger container.
  4. Warmth: Germinate at 20–25 °C. Germination takes only 5–10 days — much faster than most seeds!
  5. Keep moist: Evenly moist but never waterlogged. Peanuts prefer well-drained soil.
  6. Full sun: Peanuts love sunshine. Choose the sunniest spot available.

From Balcony to Harvest

  • Timeline: Move outdoors from mid-May. The plant needs 100–150 days to harvest.
  • Pot size: At least 30 cm diameter and 30 cm deep for a healthy plant.
  • Hilling: When flowers appear, mound loose soil around the base to help pegs enter the ground.
  • Harvest: In August/September when leaves turn yellow. Pull up the entire plant — peanuts hang from the roots!
  • Yield: One plant produces 20–50 peanuts — enough for a proper snack!

After Harvest: Roasting

  • Dry for 1–2 weeks in a well-ventilated spot.
  • Roast at 180 °C for 15–25 minutes, turning every 5 minutes. Slightly undercook — they continue browning after removal.
  • Season with salt, paprika or herbs. Perfect aperitif snack!
