The Wow Factor: How Peanuts Actually Grow
Peanuts aren't actually nuts — they're legumes, and they grow in a truly fascinating way. The plant first produces pretty yellow flowers above ground. After pollination, something incredible happens: the flower stalk (called a "peg") bends downward and pushes into the soil. There, underground, the peanut pods develop! This process is called "pegging" — and it's absolutely mesmerising to watch.
Growing Guide: Step by Step
- Prepare substrate: Soak coconut tablets in 5–6 times their volume of water.
- Prepare seeds: Shell the peanuts carefully. Soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours.
- Sow: Plant seeds 3–5 cm deep in moist substrate. Start in the terracotta pot, transplant later into a larger container.
- Warmth: Germinate at 20–25 °C. Germination takes only 5–10 days — much faster than most seeds!
- Keep moist: Evenly moist but never waterlogged. Peanuts prefer well-drained soil.
- Full sun: Peanuts love sunshine. Choose the sunniest spot available.
From Balcony to Harvest
- Timeline: Move outdoors from mid-May. The plant needs 100–150 days to harvest.
- Pot size: At least 30 cm diameter and 30 cm deep for a healthy plant.
- Hilling: When flowers appear, mound loose soil around the base to help pegs enter the ground.
- Harvest: In August/September when leaves turn yellow. Pull up the entire plant — peanuts hang from the roots!
- Yield: One plant produces 20–50 peanuts — enough for a proper snack!
After Harvest: Roasting
- Dry for 1–2 weeks in a well-ventilated spot.
- Roast at 180 °C for 15–25 minutes, turning every 5 minutes. Slightly undercook — they continue browning after removal.
- Season with salt, paprika or herbs. Perfect aperitif snack!
