This growing kit lets you raise a dwarf Sunspot sunflower (Helianthus annuus) from seed yourself. Inside the box with the large sunflower motif sits a black growing pot, together with one sachet of sunflower seeds and two coir swell tablets. The kit is assembled in France, in the Anjou region.
Growing sunflowers yourself works without a garden too: indoors you can start sowing at any time of year, in a bright spot behind a window pane. The seed comes from organic farming, certified by FR-BIO-01, and germination is guaranteed. That makes the kit a small green gift for keen gardeners, beginners and families with children who enjoy watching something grow.
The two coir tablets are fertilised and swell into coir compost when soaked in five to six times the amount of water. The back of the box carries a seven-step picture guide, the AB logo and the EU organic logo.

Soak the coir tablets in five to six times the amount of water until they swell into coir compost, keeping a little compost aside. Scatter 2 to 3 seeds per pot onto the moist coir and cover them thinly with the compost you held back. Store the remaining seeds for a later sowing in the garden or on the balcony.
The seeds germinate after a few days. Once the seedlings are 3 to 5 cm tall, leave only one plant in the pot and carefully move the others into other pots or trays. In windy weather, support the stem with a stick if needed.
Keep the pot bright behind a window pane, but not above a radiator. From April it can also go out into the sun on a balcony, windowsill or terrace. Water finely with a mister, ideally using rainwater or filtered water: the compost should stay as moist as a squeezed-out sponge and must never dry out.
Sowing at the end of April brings flowers all summer long, with the flowering time running from July to September.
Let the spent flower heads ripen until the kernels are black and hard. Then cut them off and hang them upside down in bare trees in winter as food for the birds. Because the seed is open-pollinated, the ripe flowers also give you seeds for your next sowing.
As a gardening gift the kit suits a birthday, Mother's Day, Easter or a small thank you. Poppy and edelweiss in a black pot belong to the same line.
