The Purple Pitcher Plant Growing Kit by Radis et Capucine contains everything you need to grow one of the most fascinating plants on Earth: Sarracenia purpurea – a carnivorous pitcher plant native to North America. Instead of snap traps or sticky surfaces, it uses cunning: its cup-shaped leaves lure insects with sweet nectar, and once they slip inside the smooth tube, there's no way out. The plant slowly digests them using rainwater and bacteria.
What makes this species truly special: Sarracenia purpurea is one of the few cold-hardy carnivorous plants. Once established, it can survive outdoors year-round in temperate climates, tolerating temperatures down to minus 15°C. Wild populations have thrived in the Swiss Jura mountains for over 100 years.
Growing Guide: From Seed to Carnivorous Plant
Growing Sarracenia from seed requires patience, but this step-by-step guide makes it achievable even for beginners.
Step 1: Stratification (Cold Treatment)
Sarracenia seeds need 4–8 weeks of cold treatment to break dormancy:
- Place seeds on a damp piece of kitchen paper or a few strands of sphagnum moss.
- Seal in a small plastic bag or container.
- Refrigerate at 4–7°C for at least 4 weeks, ideally 6–8 weeks.
- Important: Keep the medium moist – not wet, not dry. Check fortnightly.
Step 2: Sowing
- Soak the included coconut soil disc in lukewarm rainwater or distilled water and press into the terracotta pot.
- Place seeds on the surface and press lightly. Do not cover with soil! Sarracenia seeds need light to germinate.
- Place the pot in the included saucer and fill with 1–2 cm of rainwater.
Step 3: Germination Conditions
- Temperature: 20–25°C during the day, consistently warm.
- Light: As much as possible – at least 6 hours of direct sun daily.
- Moisture: Keep permanently moist to wet. Always leave water in the saucer. Cling film over the pot boosts humidity.
- Germination time: 4–8 weeks. Some seeds take longer – patience is essential.
Step 4: Ongoing Care
- Rainwater or distilled water only! Tap water contains minerals and lime that damage the roots. This is the single most important rule for carnivorous plants.
- Never fertilise! Sarracenia grows in nutrient-poor bogs – fertiliser burns the roots.
- Substrate: Peat-perlite mix (1:1) or pure coconut coir. No standard potting compost.
- Location: Full sun. More sun means deeper purple colouring.
- Permanently wet: In nature this plant grows in swamps. Keep the saucer filled with 1–2 cm of water at all times.
Winter Dormancy
Sarracenia purpurea needs winter dormancy from November to February. Leaves may die back – this is completely normal. The plant returns vigorously in spring.
- Outdoors (once established): Hardy to minus 15°C. In a sheltered spot with fleece around the pot, it can stay outside year-round.
- Indoors: Move to a cool, bright location (5–10°C) such as an unheated stairwell. Water less but never let it dry out completely.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I really need to refrigerate the seeds?
Yes. Without cold stratification, Sarracenia seeds rarely germinate. The 4–8 weeks in the fridge simulate winter and are essential.
Why can't I use tap water?
Carnivorous plants grow in acidic, mineral-poor bogs. Tap water minerals accumulate in the soil and kill roots. Rainwater or distilled water is mandatory.
Can it survive winter outdoors?
Yes! Sarracenia purpurea is one of the hardiest carnivorous plants (to minus 15°C). Wild colonies have survived in the Swiss Jura for over a century.
How long does growing take?
Stratification: 4–8 weeks. Germination: 4–8 weeks. First pitcher leaves: several months. Flowering-size plant: 3–5 years.
Does it really catch insects?
Yes! The pitcher leaves produce sweet nectar along the rim. Insects slip on the smooth interior, drown in collected rainwater, and are slowly digested by bacteria.
Is it safe for children and pets?
Completely. Sarracenia purpurea is non-toxic. The traps only work on small insects.
