• Napkin and packaging recyclable

At 40cm the napkin sits generously across the plate. That is the point of the long lunch format: it suits meals that stretch over hours, with plenty happening between the starter and the coffee. The harlequin pattern behind the figures works with clear diamonds and gives the Nutcrackers a strong frame. On a plain tablecloth the effect is graphic and tidy; among candles, fir sprigs and crockery it provides the splash of colour a festive table needs.

These napkins are for hosts who like long, unhurried Christmas meals: the family Christmas dinner, a brunch during Advent, drinks with friends in December, New Year's Eve. The Nutcracker is a classic of Christmas decorating, so the design works just as well on a traditionally laid table as on a colourful, mix-and-match one. They also make a sensible small gift for the person doing the cooking, alongside a bottle of wine or a tin of home-baked biscuits.

Lay one napkin per place setting and arrange them so that the same Nutcracker character does not sit next to itself. That is when the range of figures really shows. Since every napkin carries a different character, it is worth looking through the whole pack before you lay the table and spreading the figures out deliberately.

Keep the fold simple: a loose lengthways fold or a rectangle leaves the front panel with the figure on view, while an elaborate fold hides it. The long lunch size gives you room to drape the napkin across the plate or tuck it under the cutlery. There are Christmas crackers with the same Nutcracker design, so napkin and cracker match. After the meal, napkins and packaging can both go into paper recycling.
