Christmas Napkins with Dachshund and Sled

The dachshund is the centrepiece: red hat, striped jumper and the red sled with its potted fir tree and parcels. Around him, the fine hearts and stripes make sure the napkin still reads as Christmassy once it is folded, rather than showing one single large picture. Beige as the base colour keeps everything calm, so plates, glasses and cutlery stay in the foreground.

Because folding changes which part of the design you see, it is worth a quick look first. If you want the dachshund fully visible, fold the napkin once in half or lay it open under the plate.

At 33 x 33 cm these are the familiar size for napkins beside the plate, on your lap or for folding. The clear film bag shows the motif and keeps the 20 napkins together until you need them.

The napkins suit Christmas dinner with the family, an afternoon of Advent coffee and biscuits, or drinks between the holidays. With 20 in the pack there are enough for a larger table or for several smaller occasions through December. If you like Scandinavian Christmas decorating, the restrained style will feel familiar: little colour, a clear motif and plenty of room for candles and greenery. And for anyone with a dog at home, or simply a soft spot for dachshunds, the design is a quiet bit of fun.

Stand the napkins folded in a water glass, or lay them across the plate so the dachshund stays visible from above. For a bigger meal, fold them into a cutlery pocket and slip in a knife and fork. A loop of jute twine and a sprig of fir turn each napkin into a small place setting.

Folded on a wooden sideboard among fairy lights, fir greenery and red berries, they also work as decoration away from the table. As a gift to bring along, the pack pairs well with biscuits, candles or a bottle of wine.
