Bring the tropics to your windowsill! With these dragon fruit seeds, you can grow one of the world's most exotic plants: the pitaya (Hylocereus undatus). Surprisingly, dragon fruit belongs to the cactus family — but it grows as a climbing plant that can reach several metres. Its spectacular, huge white flowers open only at night and are among the most beautiful blooms in the plant kingdom.

Growing Guide: How to Sow

  1. Sowing: Do not cover the tiny seeds with soil — dragon fruit is a light germinator. Scatter the seeds on moist seed compost and press lightly.
  2. Cover: Use cling film or a glass lid to retain moisture. Ventilate briefly each day.
  3. Temperature: Optimal at 20–25 °C. A bright location without direct sunlight is ideal.
  4. Germination: The first tiny seedlings appear after 10–14 days — much faster than many other exotic plants!
  5. Transplanting: Once seedlings reach about 3 cm, transplant individually into small pots.

Care Tips

  • Support: Pitaya is a climbing cactus and needs a trellis, stake, or lattice to climb.
  • Watering: More than a typical desert cactus! Keep the substrate slightly moist but avoid waterlogging.
  • Location: Bright and warm. Outdoors in summer, indoors in winter at minimum 10 °C.
  • Flowering: With good care, the plant can bloom after 3–5 years — an unforgettable experience!

FAQ

Will I harvest real dragon fruit?
Possible only in a heated conservatory or greenhouse. The plant needs tropical conditions for fruiting. As a decorative houseplant, it's absolutely stunning regardless.

Is dragon fruit really a cactus?
Yes! Pitaya belongs to the climbing cacti (Hylocereus), originating from tropical rainforests of Central America.
