Fig Tree Seeds – Grow Your Own Mediterranean Fruit Tree

With the Fig Tree Seed Kit from Radis et Capucine, you can start your own Mediterranean gardening project. The fig tree (Ficus carica) is one of humanity's oldest cultivated plants – prized by the Greeks, Romans and Egyptians for its sweet, aromatic fruits. Now you can grow this fascinating tree from a tiny seed.

This set from the renowned French seed company based in Angers, Loire Valley, includes carefully selected seeds and detailed instructions. Radis et Capucine has been crafting premium organic seed kits for over 25 years – Made in France.

Step-by-Step Growing Guide

1. Sowing (Light Germinator!)

  • Critical: Fig seeds need light to germinate! Do NOT cover them with soil
  • Scatter the tiny seeds onto moist, fine seed-starting mix and press down gently
  • Mist the surface with a spray bottle – don't pour water (it washes away the seeds)
  • Cover with cling film or a glass pane to create a humid environment
  • Place in a bright, warm spot (20–25°C / 68–77°F)

2. Germination

  • Seeds germinate within 15–25 days at a constant 20–25°C
  • Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged
  • Ventilate the cover briefly each day to prevent mould
  • Once seedlings have 2–3 true leaves, remove the cover

3. Transplanting

  • At 5–8 cm height, repot into larger containers with well-draining, nutrient-rich soil
  • Mix: 60% potting soil + 20% sand + 20% perlite for optimal drainage
  • Keep indoors during the first year and gradually acclimatise to full sun

4. Location and Care

  • Sun: Full sun – at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily
  • Watering: Regular but moderate. Figs tolerate brief drought better than waterlogging
  • Fertilising: Every 2–3 weeks from April to August with organic fertiliser
  • Winter protection: Protect young trees below -10°C with fleece or burlap

When Will It Bear Fruit?

Seed-grown fig trees typically produce their first fruits after 3–5 years. Container-grown figs often fruit earlier, as the restricted root space encourages fruiting. Figs can produce two harvests per year – the Breba crop in early summer and the main crop in autumn.

Tips and Tricks

  • Light germinator: The most common mistake is covering seeds with soil – fig seeds need light!
  • Container figs often fruit faster than those planted in the ground
  • A hard pruning in spring encourages vigorous new growth and more fruit
  • Fig leaves are edible and make excellent wraps for grilling fish or cheese
  • Figs are self-fertile – a single tree is enough for a harvest

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won't my fig seeds germinate?
Figs need light to germinate – do not cover with soil. Scatter on the surface and press gently. Ensure constant warmth (20–25°C).

Can I grow a fig on a balcony?
Absolutely! Figs make excellent container plants. Use a pot of at least 30 cm diameter with good drainage. Move indoors (cool, bright room at 5–10°C) for winter.

Do I need two trees for fruit?
No! Fig trees are self-fertile – a single tree will produce fruit without cross-pollination.
