The ornamental banana variety Musa ensete is one of the most impressive houseplants you can grow: once it gets going, it grows rapidly and can reach up to 2 metres in its first year. Its huge, lush green leaves — over a metre long — transform any room into a tropical paradise.
Growing Guide: How to Sow
- Pre-treat seeds: Soak the seeds in warm water (approx. 30 °C) for 24–48 hours. Optional: gently scarify the shell with sandpaper to help water penetrate.
- Sowing: Plant seeds about 1 cm deep in seed compost. Keep the substrate evenly moist but not waterlogged.
- Heat is key: Germination requires a constant 25–30 °C. A heat mat is almost essential — a windowsill alone is often too cool.
- Be patient: Germination takes 2–8 weeks and is highly variable. Some seeds take even longer. Don't give up!
- After germination: Place in a bright spot out of direct midday sun. Water regularly and feed weekly from spring onwards.
Care Tips
- Location: Bright and warm. In summer, place outdoors on a balcony or terrace. Bring inside from September — the plant is not frost-hardy.
- Overwintering: Keep indoors in a bright spot at minimum 15 °C. Reduce watering, stop feeding.
- Growth: After the slow germination phase, growth explodes. 1–2 metres in the first year is typical, with leaves exceeding 1 metre in length.

This is an ornamental banana. It won't produce edible fruit in our climate, but its spectacular tropical foliage more than makes up for it.
