From seed to plant — no soil needed! The Terracotta Seed Sprouters by Kikkerland are a clever set of three germination plates that let you sprout seeds of all sizes directly over a glass of water. Natural, sustainable, and beautiful on any windowsill.
The concept is brilliantly simple: place one of the three terracotta dishes on an ordinary drinking glass filled with water, position your seeds on the dish — and watch as roots grow down through the holes into the water. Once seedlings are ready, transplant them into soil.
Three Plates for All Seed Sizes
- Large opening (2.5 cm): Perfect for large seeds — avocado, mango, sweet potato, broad beans.
- Medium opening (1.2 cm): Ideal for medium seeds — pumpkin seeds, garlic cloves, sunflower seeds, acorns.
- Grid base: For small seeds — broccoli, mung beans, cress, chia, lentils, basil and other herbs.
How It Works: 4 Simple Steps
- Fill a glass: Use any drinking glass or recycled jar with water.
- Place the dish: Set the appropriate terracotta plate on the glass rim. It sits securely on the edge.
- Position seeds: Place seeds on the dish above the opening so the base touches the water.
- Let them sprout: Place in a bright spot. Roots grow through the holes into the water. Change water every few days.
Why Terracotta Is Ideal for Sprouting
- Breathable: Terracotta allows air circulation — promoting healthy root growth and preventing mould.
- Natural material: No plastic, no chemicals. 100% natural and sustainable.
- Moisture regulating: Terracotta absorbs excess moisture and releases it slowly — perfect germination conditions.
- Beautiful: The warm terracotta look is a decorative highlight on any kitchen windowsill.
What You Can Sprout
- Herbs: Basil, parsley, coriander, dill, chives
- Vegetables: Broccoli, radish, rocket, cress, peas

- Exotics: Avocado, mango, sweet potato
- Nuts & seeds: Hazelnut, walnut, sunflower seeds
Tips & Tricks
- Change water regularly — every 2–3 days to prevent algae and rot.
- Warm location — most seeds germinate faster at 20–25 °C. A windowsill with morning sun is ideal.
- Patience varies — avocados need 2–8 weeks; cress and mung beans sprout in 2–3 days.
