Step-by-Step Growing Guide
1. Seed Preparation
- Remove the orange tuft from each seed completely
- Nick the seed coat with a knife or sandpaper to allow water absorption
- Soak for 24–48 hours in lukewarm water to soften the shell
2. Sowing and Germination
- Plant seeds 0.5–1 cm deep in moist seed-starting mix
- Maintain a constant temperature of 25–30°C – a heat mat is highly recommended
- Cover with cling film to create a mini-greenhouse
- Be patient! Germination takes 1–3 months, sometimes longer. This is completely normal for Strelitzia
- Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged – soggy soil causes rot
3. After Germination
- Remove the cover and place in a bright spot
- Repot into well-draining, nutrient-rich soil
- Ideal mix: 60% potting soil + 20% perlite + 20% compost
- Gradually acclimatise to direct sunlight to avoid leaf burn
4. Location and Care
- Light: At least 6 hours of direct sun – south-facing window or conservatory ideal
- Temperature: 18–25°C, never below 10°C in winter
- Watering: Regular watering, allow soil to dry slightly between waterings
- Humidity: Mist the leaves occasionally, especially in winter with dry heating air
- Fertilising: Every 2 weeks from spring to autumn with liquid fertiliser
- Not frost-hardy: Strictly an indoor plant in cooler climates – happy outdoors in summer, but protect from frost
When Will It Flower?
Let's be honest: seed-grown Strelitzia take 5–7 years to produce their first flowers. That's a long wait – but even without blooms, the large, banana-like leaves make it a stunning houseplant. The flowers then appear on long stems and last for weeks – a reward well worth the wait.
Tips and Tricks
- A heat mat significantly speeds up germination – consistent bottom warmth is key
- Fresh seeds germinate better – use them promptly after receiving
- The plant reaches 1.5–2 m indoors – plan for space
- Strelitzia prefer being slightly root-bound – don't repot too early, as this actually encourages flowering
- Brown leaf edges indicate dry air – mist more often or place next to a water dish
Frequently Asked Questions
Why isn't my seed germinating?
Strelitzia are notoriously slow germinators. 1–3 months is normal. Ensure constant warmth above 25°C and moist (not wet) soil. Have you removed the orange tuft and nicked the shell?
How tall will it grow?
1.5–2 metres indoors; up to 2.5 metres outdoors in tropical climates.
Can I keep it outdoors in a cool climate?
Only in summer. Strelitzia cannot tolerate frost and must overwinter in a bright, cool room (10–15°C).
Why does flowering take so long?
The plant must reach maturity and a certain size before flowering. Cuttings flower faster than seed-grown plants.
My leaves are curling – what should I do?
Curled leaves indicate underwatering or dry air. Water thoroughly and mist the leaves.
