Play Ball with Smiley Face

The motif is quickly told: a smiley face. A smiley needs no explanation, no prior knowledge and no translation. Children and adults read this sign in exactly the same way, whatever their age or language. For a small gift that is handy, because the ball goes down well before a single word has been said about it.

In play it gives the ball a role of its own. It is not simply the ball, it is the smiley ball, and around a face like that children happily invent their own stories, names and rules.

The play ball has a diameter of 23 cm. That is the figure you need when you want to compare it with the balls already sitting in the box at home. All the other details about the ball are gathered here.

The ball is aimed at children and at families who like being outdoors. In the garden, at the beach and on the playground it is quickly to hand: at the beach it belongs with the kit next to the spade and the towel, and on the grass a clear patch is all it takes. A ball game works just as well with two players as with ten.

As a gift it is small, affordable and uncomplicated. At a birthday party it works in the favour bag and among the prizes for games; in summer it makes a fine present to take to a holiday destination or to a visit at the grandparents'. It also makes sense alongside a larger present, because it invites movement outdoors instead of sitting still.

The easiest start is throwing and catching in a circle: the wider the circle gets, the more exciting the round becomes. Two marks drawn in the sand or two bags placed on the grass make a goal in under a minute, and simple throwing turns into a game with points. For smaller children, rolling the ball from hand to hand is often enough, at the beach for instance along a channel dug in the sand.

If you are giving the ball away, add a game idea with it, because a ball gets played with as soon as somebody starts the first round. For a birthday party it is worth thinking up two or three simple games beforehand that work with a single ball, such as target throwing, a relay race or ball over the line.
