Numbers you can hold, operators you can slot in and textures under your feet: this set ties the first steps in maths to movement. Instead of writing sums on paper, your child presses soft octagons with digits and symbols into the recesses of the mats, standing on surfaces that feel different with every step.
Six mats connect along their puzzle edges into one continuous surface of 75 x 50 cm, or you can spread them around the room. Add to that 48 octagons and twelve task cards that set the pace. The set is made in Latvia and belongs to the ORTONATURE sensory mat range.
Three stiff base mats form the ground, three soft play mats hold the octagons. Everything else is included, there is nothing to buy separately.

You draw a task card and place it beside the play area. It states which digits or signs are wanted. Your child picks the matching octagons from the pile and presses them into the cut-outs of the mat. Because the octagons are made of soft material they sit tight enough to be stepped on, yet still come out by hand.
The mats «Let's Play Math 1-9» and «Let's Play Math 2-8» cover different number ranges. The geometry mat is about shapes rather than digits. The task changes without you needing new material.
The twelve task cards are arranged in four levels and marked accordingly. The first level stays with recognising shapes and digits. The second adds simple quantities and matching, such as the path of numbers. The third introduces the operators, meaning plus, minus, times and divided by as well as greater than and less than. On the fourth level these become complete problems that your child assembles and checks alone, up to the mathematical maze.
Because every level uses the same mats and the same octagons, the set stays in use for several years. You simply bring out different cards.
Every mat carries its own relief. The base mats are evenly structured, the play mats have rounded bumps between the cut-outs for the octagons. Standing on them barefoot feels different on each mat. That is what sets this apart from a learning game at the table.
It therefore works as a movement game too: read the card, walk to the right mat, place the octagon, walk back. The material is PVC, the surfaces are cleaned with soapy water and then rinsed.
- Put the base mats on a smooth floor, the surface then shifts less.
- Sort the octagons into digits and signs before playing, it saves searching.
- Start with one play mat only, otherwise the choice gets too wide.
- For two children: each gets a mat of their own, the task card applies to both.
- To store, stack the mats and return the octagons to the box.
