The olive tree (Olea europaea) is one of humanity's oldest cultivated plants and has been a symbol of peace, wisdom and endurance since antiquity. With its slender, silvery-green leaves, characteristically gnarled trunk and edible fruit — the olives from which the famous olive oil is pressed — it is also a decorative eye-catcher in any living space.
Instead of buying a ready-grown tree, you can witness the magical transformation from tiny seed to strong sapling yourself. A Mediterranean piece of nature on your windowsill, in the winter garden or in the summer garden — and the satisfaction of having grown something living with your own hands.

- Stratify: Pre-treat the olive seeds in the fridge for 4–8 weeks to encourage germination.
- Prepare the substrate: Fill the growing pots with the mix of river sand and substrate.
- Sow: Place 1–2 seeds per pot about 2 cm deep, press lightly and water gently.
- Location: Bright, warm spot (20–25 °C), no direct sunlight in the first weeks.
- Patience: Germination can take 4–12 weeks — keep evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging.
- Repot: Once the seedling reaches 10–15 cm, move it into a larger pot.
- Light: Lots of sun — the brighter, the better
- Water: Moderate watering, let the soil dry slightly between waterings
- Temperature: Outside in summer, bright cool room in winter (5–10 °C ideal)
- Fertiliser: Spring and summer every 4–6 weeks with organic fertiliser
- Pruning: Regular trimming for bonsai shaping
- Use lukewarm water for watering — olive trees dislike ice-cold roots
- Start bonsai training from the second year, let it grow strong first
- Avoid heating air in winter, olive trees prefer fresh air
- Patience is the key ingredient — olive trees grow slowly but live very long
