Behind the 24 doors of this advent calendar there is no chocolate but 24 seed packets. Every day reveals a different variety: old, traditional vegetables, herbs and flowers. All of the seeds come from certified organic growing.
That turns December into preparation for the next gardening season. By the end you have a generous starter set for your own herb and vegetable bed. The seeds can be grown in a garden or allotment, in a raised bed or in a pot on the balcony and terrace. An organic vegetable tea is hidden in the calendar as an extra.
The calendar is made of sturdy cardboard and stands up on its own. The front shows illustrated vegetables and a snow-covered cottage, along with a labelling field for the name of the person you are giving it to.
- 24 seed packets behind 24 doors, a different variety each day
- 24 different historical vegetable, herb and flower varieties
- 1 organic vegetable tea as a hidden extra
- Seeds from certified organic growing
- Open-pollinated, no hybrid seed, free from genetic engineering
- Dimensions 8.2 x 30.3 x 17 cm (length x width x height)
- Weight 220 g
- Sturdy cardboard for standing up
- Red flax is sown 1 cm deep in sandy soil
- Large nasturtium grows up to 3 m tall
The selection ranges from classics to rarities: four tomatoes (Moneymaker, Green Zebra, Marmande and a yellow pear-shaped one), Berlicum 2 carrots, French Breakfast 3 radishes with a white tip, Delikatess blau kohlrabi, Salad Bowl cutting lettuce, Winterriesen spinach, endive, Marketmore cucumber, Roter Zentner pumpkin and De Cayenne chilli. Herbs include wild rocket, flat-leaf parsley, dill, borage and true lavender, and the flowers are red flax, rose-red cup mallow, Pacific Beauty marigolds and large nasturtium. Each variety comes with details on position, planting distance, sowing time and flowering time.
The seeds are open-pollinated rather than hybrid, and free from genetic engineering. The plants can therefore be propagated further: you can keep seeds from your own harvest and sow them again the following year.
Once Advent is over, sort the packets by sowing time. Berlicum 2 carrots start as early as February, De Cayenne chilli is raised indoors from February, the tomatoes are pre-grown from March, and Winterriesen spinach only goes into the soil from August. True lavender germinates in light, so its seed is covered only lightly with soil, and the same goes for dill.
Soak borage seed in lukewarm water before sowing it directly, and leave the cup mallow seed in water overnight; do not move the borage once it is in place. For a balcony or terrace, Salad Bowl lettuce works well because it is picked leaf by leaf and grows back, as does flat-leaf parsley, which does nicely in a pot. As a present for Advent, Christmas, St Nicholas or a Secret Santa, simply write the name in the field on the front.
What is included in the advent calendar? Behind the 24 doors there are 24 seed packets, each with a different historical variety. An organic vegetable tea is hidden in the calendar as well.
Which varieties are included? 24 different historical vegetable, herb and flower varieties, among them four tomatoes, carrots, radishes, pumpkin, dill, lavender and marigolds.
Do I need a garden for this? No. The seeds suit a garden or allotment, a raised bed or pots on the balcony and terrace.
What does open-pollinated mean? It is not hybrid seed, so you can collect seed from the plants and propagate them further. The seed is also free from genetic engineering.
How big is the calendar? It measures 8.2 x 30.3 x 17 cm and weighs 220 g. The sturdy cardboard stands up well.
