Tactile Cubes is a sensory matching game made of wood and fabric. A beechwood board holds ten recesses, and ten coloured cups fit into them, each with a different surface: soft, rough, scratchy, smooth, velvety. The task is to feel the textures and put every cup in its right place. The game belongs to Montessori sensory education and works through touch rather than pictures or letters.
It gets interesting the moment the eyes stop helping. Blindfolded, or simply with hands behind the back, children notice how precisely fingertips can work. Along the way the textures get named out loud: soft, rough, scratchy, smooth, velvety. The set develops hand-eye coordination, sensory awareness and concentration, and it also suits inclusive learning. Made in China.

Three variations have become classics. In the first, children touch freely and describe out loud what they feel. In the second, play runs memory style: find two cups with the same texture, for instance in an extension with further cups. In the third, eyes are covered and the matching happens blind.
The board provides the structure: ten recesses mean ten clear places, and at the end you can see straight away whether everything sits where it should. For the youngest players, simply filling and emptying the board is a first exercise in itself, best done with an adult nearby, as the cups are small.
Tactile Cubes is made for children who are just starting to put perception into words, so it works as an introduction to sensory learning at home, at playgroup or in nursery. Because the game functions entirely without visual input, it also suits people with a visual impairment and is used for sensory activation in senior care programmes. Remove all packaging before play. Clean the board and the cups with a soft dry cloth and do not immerse them in water. Store the set away from direct sunlight and heat.
Put the cups back into the ten recesses after play, and everything is ready for next time. Name the textures together out loud, which brings fresh vocabulary into the conversation. With small children, an adult stays nearby, as the cups are small. Wrapping is easy too: at 27.5 x 16.5 x 4.4 cm the packaging parcels up flat.
