Cardamom Seeds

The packet holds seed only, not a growing kit, so you choose the compost and the container yourself.

Soak the seeds overnight in water at room temperature so they swell. Then scatter them on moist seed compost and cover them with only a thin layer of soil. Cover the container with perforated clear film and air it for two hours every 2 to 3 days.

Keep the tray bright and warm at 20 to 25 °C. The surface of the compost should stay moist, for example with a water sprayer, but never wet. Depending on the temperature, the first seedlings appear after 2 to 3 weeks.

Cardamom likes a warm spot in partial shade to full sun, but protect it from harsh direct sun, as the leaves scorch. Normal room temperature is enough, and you raise the humidity by misting the plant often. Water regularly, avoid waterlogging and let the surface of the compost dry off a little in between. From April to September, feed every 2 weeks with a weak dose of liquid fertiliser.

Once the surface of the compost is full of shoots, repot into a larger container with all-purpose compost or divide the plant. In winter it needs a bright, warm place above 16 °C and far less water, just enough to keep the root ball from drying out, plus regular misting against dry air from the heating.

The seeds contain an essential oil with a spicy, sweet and sharp aroma. Because it is volatile, grind or crush cardamom seeds only when you actually need them. Run the leaves briefly between your fingers as you walk past and the plant releases its scent.
