Blooming tea turns a teapot into a small stage: this tin holds five hand-tied tea flowers, each one individually sealed. Placed in hot water, the unassuming ball slowly opens and releases the blossoms tied inside. What remains is a mild green tea and a floating bouquet in the glass. The tea is made in Sri Lanka.
The tin contains five different tea flowers. Mao feng green tea is the base of each one, combined with blossoms such as globe amaranth, lily, calendula and jasmine in varying mixes. One variety relies on green tea and calendula alone, others bring jasmine blossom along. Because every ball is sealed on its own, aroma and shape stay intact until you brew it. At 130 g in total, the decorative tin needs no extra wrapping.
Each tea flower is a firm ball of tea leaves with dried blossoms tied into the centre. Take it out of its seal, place it in a glass teapot or a large heat-resistant glass and pour hot water over it. Over the next few minutes the leaves loosen, drift apart and reveal the blossom at the core.
The infusion itself stays mild and floral, carried by the Mao feng green tea. Every tea flower is made for more than one brew: the blossom stays open and the flavour becomes a little gentler with each further infusion, so one ball gives you several cups.
