This 3D crystal ball is a clear sphere of K9 crystal glass with the solar system laser-engraved inside it. It stands on a base of real wood with a built-in LED light and turns slowly on top, so the planets drift quietly onwards while the base lights the engraving from below in changing colours.
The glass ball with light is made as a decorative piece and a mood lamp: on a desk, on a sideboard or as a bedside light. Space and astronomy fans get a small piece of celestial mechanics, and because it also works as a plain clear glass object by day, the solar system lamp stays worth looking at around the clock.
The engraving sits inside the crystal glass rather than on its surface. That is why the solar system reads as three-dimensional from every angle: move around the sphere and the planets shift against one another, as though a tiny model were suspended in the glass. Because the ball turns slowly, the engraving keeps presenting itself from new angles even while you stay seated.
The base is made of real wood and holds the LED light inside. The lighting cycles through colours, so the engraved planets appear in one shade after another. Together with the slow turn of the glass ball, that adds up to a calm play of light that works as decoration and as an evening mood lamp.
Power comes in over USB. You can run the lamp from a USB port on a computer, from a socket strip with a USB connection or from a USB mains adapter, whichever is closest to the spot you have chosen.
Ball and base together stay compact at 12 cm high and fit onto a well-filled desk or a narrow bedside table. At 0.92 kg, the solar system crystal ball has a solid, substantial feel.

The space night light has most effect in a darkened room: the less ambient light, the more clearly the engraved planets stand out in the glass. Choose a place within reach of a USB socket. Against a dark wall the colour changes come across more strongly than in front of a pale background.
As a present, the planet lamp suits a birthday, Christmas, a housewarming or a small gift to bring along. Anyone keen on planets and astronomy gets an object that earns its place on the shelf even switched off. When you hand it over, plug the base into a USB socket so the turning ball and the changing colours can be seen right away.
What is included? You get 1 crystal ball and 1 wooden base with LED.
How is the lamp powered? It runs over USB.
How big is the ball with its base? It measures 9 cm wide, 9 cm deep and 12 cm high and weighs 0.92 kg.
Does the ball turn by itself? Yes, the glass ball turns slowly on the illuminated base.
