A white plastic tablecloth measuring 130 × 180 cm is the quickest way to turn an everyday table into a party table. It lays a calm, bright surface over scratches, water marks and wood grain, and everything you put on it reads more clearly: plates, glasses, the cake, the decoration in the middle. The pack holds exactly one cloth, which is all a normal dining table needs.
White is the colour that stays in the background. Bright napkins, garlands and confetti stand out better on it than on a patterned cloth, and if you are working with theme colours the base stays neutral. 130 × 180 cm is a format for classic dining tables seating four to six people. On a table top of around 110 × 160 cm you get a short drape on every side that hides the edge. Lay the cloth crosswise on a narrower table and more material falls over the long sides.
For a long banquet table, combine several cloths and let them overlap where they meet. With pushed-together tables and buffets that is the usual solution, because the join barely shows under platters, bowls or a row of flowers.
The cloth is made of plastic and has a smooth surface. Spills therefore stay on top and can be wiped away with a damp cloth and a little mild detergent, with no need for abrasives. After the party you can simply dispose of it, or wipe it down and keep it for the next occasion if you have treated it carefully.
For storage, fold it dry. Creases from the pack can usually be smoothed out with your hands. If you want to iron it, use a low temperature and a cotton cloth in between, because direct contact with the iron damages the plastic.
Put a fabric tablecloth down first and the plastic cloth on top: plates and glasses then sound softer as they are set down. Confetti stays clearly visible on the smooth surface and can be gathered up together with the cloth at the end, which reduces the clear-up to a single move.
Outdoors on the terrace or in the garden, secure the corners with tablecloth clips or stand something heavy on them so the wind cannot lift anything. And once a cloth has had its party outing, it still does good service as a protective sheet for painting or craft work.
