The Self Care Planter is a self-watering ceramic plant pot: a small smiling pot that sits in its own mini foot spa with its legs dangling in the water. Those cotton legs do the work, drawing water from the base up into the soil, so your herbs and small houseplants stay hydrated for up to eight weeks, without a daily trip to the watering can.
It is made for people who like plants but rarely remember them at the right moment: often away, often busy. The design is deliberately playful, face and foot spa included, and the pot was named Gift of the Year 2024. It arrives in a plastic-free gift box and is ready to hand over as it is.
The base is the water reservoir and the planter sits on top of it. The cotton legs reach from the pot down into the water and carry moisture upwards by capillary action, so the soil takes up as much as it can hold.
Your job shrinks to a glance into the base and a refill every few weeks. Once the reservoir runs dry, the soil simply dries out as usual again.
Both parts are made of ceramic. The pot is kept small on purpose so it fits on a windowsill, a desk or a kitchen counter.

Kitchen herbs and small houseplants are what this pot is for. With a pot width of around 9 cm you are looking at basil, parsley or a young green plant rather than a full-grown Monstera.
As a gift it suits plant lovers, busy people and anyone who has just moved in, so it works as a housewarming present.
Water the soil thoroughly from above when you plant, then fill the reservoir, so the self-watering starts with damp soil. Choose a bright spot, as herbs reward light. Check the water level in the base every few weeks and top it up before a longer trip away.
Ceramic is sturdy but does not like knocks, so do not drop it. When you change plants, rinse base and pot with lukewarm water rather than putting them in the dishwasher. In direct sun a film of algae can build up in the reservoir, and a rinse with clean water deals with it. Keep the pot indoors over winter, since ceramic can crack in frost.
How long does one fill of water last? Plants stay supplied for up to 8 weeks. How long it really lasts depends on the plant, the light and the room temperature.
