Plant happiness without daily watering: the Pikkii Self Care Planter is a self-watering ceramic plant pot with a playful foot-bath design. Cotton wicks draw water from the reservoir up into the soil — one fill, and your herbs or houseplants stay happily hydrated for up to 8 weeks. Perfect for frequent travellers, plant beginners and anyone who has accidentally let their basil die of thirst.

The pot was awarded the prestigious Gift of the Year 2024 — a quality seal for sustainable lifestyle design. At a compact 10.2 × 13.8 × 14.5 cm it fits any windowsill, kitchen ledge or desk and ships in 100% plastic-free gift packaging with instructions.

How self-watering works

The reservoir in the foot-bath base holds the water supply — cotton wicks connect the reservoir to the soil in the planter above. Through capillary action, the wicks pull exactly as much water as the plant actually consumes. Refill every few weeks — the plant takes care of the rest. No overwatering, no drying out, no holiday guilt.

Pikkii is a British design studio in Mendlesham, multi-time Gift of the Year winner, known for sustainable and beautifully made lifestyle products.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions about the Self Care Planter

How long does a reservoir really last?
Depending on plant, light and room temperature, 4–8 weeks. A thirsty basil in direct sun needs more frequent refills; a low-maintenance succulent lasts 2–3 months.

Which plants fit in?
Best for kitchen herbs (basil, parsley, chives, mint) and small houseplants like Pilea, mini succulents or baby plants. Too small for very large plants.

Can I repot existing plants?
Yes — fill the pot with good potting soil, add the plant, thread the cotton wick neatly, fill the reservoir. Instructions included.

Does the system work in winter?
Yes, even better — plants use less water in winter and the reservoir lasts longer. Just keep the pot away from direct heating airflow (causes dry soil surface).

What happens when the reservoir is empty?
The wicks draw water until the reservoir is dry — then normal soil drying begins slowly. You spot it by the soil colour, refilling takes 10 seconds.

Is the ceramic fragile?
Like all ceramics: handle with care, don't drop. Falls on hard floor can crack it. In normal use very robust.

Suitable as a gift?
Ideal — compact, aesthetic, with instructions in plastic-free packaging. Perfect for plant lovers, new home owners or as a housewarming present.

Are spare wicks available?
The cotton wicks are durable and usually don't need replacement. If they do, standard cotton wicks from a craft store work.

Does the pot work outside?
On terrace or balcony in summer, yes — but not in heavy rain (reservoir overflows) and not in frost (ceramic can crack).

Tips & tricks – get the most out of it

  • Refill routine: set a calendar reminder every 4–6 weeks – avoids surprises
  • Soak first: on first fill, water the soil thoroughly once, then let self-watering take over
  • Location: bright but not scorching – east-facing window ideal, south-facing with curtain in summer
  • Holiday safety: top up before going on holiday – guaranteed living plant on return
  • Gift bundle: pair with herb seeds or a mini plant – ready to go
  • Collect: combine with Pikkii Paper Plants Origami and Cat Hair Remover for a sustainable desk universe

Care & storage

  • Check reservoir: review water level every 3–4 weeks
  • Algae: in direct sun an algae film can form – occasionally rinse the reservoir with clean water
  • Frost protection: ceramic can crack at sub-zero temps – keep indoors in winter
  • Clean: when changing plants, rinse with lukewarm water, not dishwasher-safe
