This guitar-shaped corkscrew is a waiter's friend whose handle is modelled on an electric guitar: body, neck and headstock are shaped from beechwood. Folded shut, the little guitar lies flat on the table and looks more like an ornament than a tool. Only when you swing the parts out does it become clear that a complete wine opener is hiding inside.
It was designed by Hector Serrano. The spiral, the lever and a small serrated blade all fold back into the guitar handle after use, and the metal parts are made of stainless steel 420. That makes it a present for guitarists, for rock fans and for anyone who likes opening a bottle at the end of the day.
The construction follows the classic waiter's friend. You fold out the corkscrew spiral and turn it into the centre of the cork. Then you rest the fold-out lever on the neck of the bottle and lift the cork out with a levering movement, instead of pulling hard on the handle. The small serrated blade is there to cut the foil around the neck before you start on the cork.
Once the bottle is open, all three parts fold back into the wooden handle, so the guitar stays compact and the spiral is not left exposed in a drawer.
The handle is beechwood and the working parts are stainless steel 420, which gives the piece its brown and silver look.
- Beechwood handle shaped like an electric guitar, with body, neck and headstock
- Metal parts made of stainless steel 420
- Fold-out corkscrew spiral
- Fold-out lever that rests on the bottle neck
- Small fold-out blade with a serrated edge
- Size when folded about 13.5 × 4.3 × 1.5 cm
- Weight about 90 g
- Designed by Hector Serrano
The handle speaks to anyone who plays guitar or listens to rock: the shape with body, neck and headstock is recognisable at a glance, even though the whole thing measures only 13.5 cm folded. At about 90 g it is light enough to take along to a picnic or a barbecue evening.
As a gift the wine opener works for a birthday, for Christmas, for Father's Day or for a housewarming. It appeals to men and women alike, and since there is no size or flavour to guess, it is a safe choice even when you do not know the person well.
Place the spiral in the middle of the cork and turn it in as straight as you can, so the lever sits cleanly on the bottle neck. Fold the blade and the spiral back in once the bottle is open, and the guitar lies flat in a kitchen drawer or a picnic basket.
Giving it takes almost no preparation: the corkscrew comes on a grey card with gold lettering that leaves the product visible. You can hand it over as it is, or pair it with a bottle of wine to make a small set. Taken along to a dinner invitation, the two together make a complete present.
