The Avocado Grow Kit is a floating cork planter that lets you grow your own little tree from an avocado stone. Instead of balancing the stone on toothpicks over a glass, you sit it in the cork holder and float the holder on water. The cork stays on the surface and keeps the stone in contact with the water until it germinates and sends out roots.
It is made for anyone who likes avocados and enjoys having something green on the windowsill. All you need is a standard avocado stone, a glass of water and a little patience. The holder is reusable, instructions are included, and the cork is fully biodegradable. The kit was also shortlisted for the Gift of the Year Award 2022.
The kit keeps things simple: the floating cork planter and a set of instructions. The avocado stone is not included, and that is rather the point. You take the stone from the next avocado you eat and sit it in the holder, so something that usually ends up in the bin gets a second round.

- Shortlisted for the Gift of the Year Award 2022
- Weight 110 g
- Made in China
The stone sits in the opening of the holder, and the holder goes into a glass of water. Because cork floats naturally, the holder stays on the surface and moves with the water level. The stone is therefore always held the same way in the water, with nothing for you to adjust. After that it is simply a matter of waiting for it to germinate and form roots.
Toothpicks pushed into the stone to prop it on the rim of a glass are not part of the exercise here. Once the little tree moves into a pot, the holder can go back in the water with the next stone.
Avocado fans, houseplant collectors and anyone who likes watching something small turn into something big will get the most out of it. As a gift it works as a dinner-party offering, as an extra alongside a plant present, in an advent calendar or as a small thank you for flatmates and desk neighbours. At 110 g it is light enough to travel in a parcel without fuss.
Hand the kit over together with a ripe avocado so the recipient can start straight away. If you like giving plants, add a pot and some soil for later, when the little tree outgrows its glass of water. At 110 g the kit still finds room in a parcel that is already fairly full. And because the holder is reusable, it is worth keeping: the next stone will turn up in the kitchen soon enough. A spot by the window where the glass is clearly in view turns the waiting into a small daily ritual.
What is included in the kit? A floating cork planter and instructions. The avocado stone is not included, so you use a standard one from your kitchen.
How does the cork planter work? You insert an avocado stone and place the holder in a glass of water. The cork floats on top and keeps the stone in the water until it germinates and sprouts roots.
Do I still need toothpicks for the stone? No. The holder floats on the water by itself, so toothpicks are not needed.
What is the planter made of? Cork, which is fully biodegradable.
Can I use the holder more than once? Yes, the cork holder is reusable and can go back in the water with the next stone.
