Astromo Solar Eclipse Glasses
No longer available
Switzerland's most successful solar eclipse glasses: For the great solar eclipse of 12 August 2026, more than 20,000 people in Switzerland chose the ISO-certified glasses by Astromo – sold out to the very last pair and rated top marks by our customers. And the story continues: on Monday, 2 August 2027, the next solar eclipse will pass over Switzerland – right in the middle of the summer holidays and, this time, conveniently in the morning.
Over Switzerland the Sun will be about 55 percent covered (Zurich, Basel, Berne), in Geneva and the Valais close to 60 percent. The eclipse starts shortly after 10 am, reaches its maximum at around 11:07 am and ends at about 12:15 pm. The Sun will be high in the sky – perfect for watching from your balcony, garden or the lido, with no need for a clear view of the horizon. And if you spend your holidays in the south, you can even witness the event of the century: in southern Spain, Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt the Sun will be totally eclipsed – at up to 6 minutes 23 seconds the longest total solar eclipse of the 21st century over land. Packing your glasses pays off twice.
With the ISO-certified solar eclipse glasses by Astromo you protect your eyes safely and enjoy the natural spectacle in all its glory – with no risk to your retina. Remember: every person needs their own pair – best order for the whole family right away. And learn from 2026: order early and your glasses are secured – in summer 2026 certified glasses were sold out across Switzerland weeks before the event.
Looking directly at the Sun – even for seconds during a partial eclipse – can cause irreversible damage to the retina without you feeling any pain. Ordinary sunglasses, welding glass, exposed film or smoked glass offer NO protection. Only filters conforming to ISO 12312-2:2015 reliably block harmful UV, infrared and visible radiation to a safe level.
- ISO 12312-2:2015 certified – the internationally recognised standard for direct solar viewing
- 0.16 mm black PET filter with UV and IR blocking
- High-quality laminated cardboard frame – water-, sweat- and tear-resistant
- Foldable in two configurations – fits adults and children
- REACH-compliant and free of harmful substances
- Designed in Mallorca by Astromo, member of the Meteoritical Society
- Curated vintage designs – e.g. “Cosmos”, “Starman” or “Nemo”, delivered assorted (no design selection possible)
- Proven in practice – used more than 20,000 times in Switzerland for the 2026 eclipse
- 1 × Astromo solar eclipse glasses (assorted design)
When exactly is the 2027 solar eclipse visible in Switzerland?
On Monday, 2 August 2027, in the morning. In Zurich the partial phase begins shortly after 10 am, the maximum is reached at around 11:07 am and it is all over by about 12:15 pm (Central European Summer Time). The Sun will then be about 48 degrees above the horizon – no special vantage point required.
What percentage of the Sun will be covered in Switzerland?
Around 55 percent in German-speaking Switzerland (Berne about 57 percent), close to 60 percent in Geneva and the Valais. The path of totality runs across southern Spain (Cádiz, Málaga, Gibraltar), Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt (Luxor) and on to Saudi Arabia – in Central Europe it remains a partial eclipse.
I'll be on holiday on 2 August 2027 – are the glasses worth it?
All the more! In Spain, Italy and around the Mediterranean the eclipse is much deeper than in Switzerland, and in southern Spain and North Africa it is even total. Experience shows that certified glasses sell out quickly or become overpriced locally – pack your Astromo glasses flat in your hand luggage.
Why the Astromo glasses in particular?
Because they have proven themselves: we shipped more than 20,000 pairs all over Switzerland for the 2026 eclipse, with top ratings from our customers. ISO-certified filter, tear-resistant frame, foldable for children and adults – and thanks to the vintage designs they look great too.
Where can I buy solar eclipse glasses in Switzerland?
Right here in the shop – we ship from our warehouse in Kriens. Shipping with PostPac Priority costs CHF 6.95 and is free from an order value of CHF 70; on request we also deliver on Saturdays for CHF 9.95. We do not offer local pick-up – your order always goes out by post.
Can I choose the design?
No – we sell the glasses assorted in various curated Astromo designs (e.g. “Cosmos”, “Starman” or “Nemo”). If you order several pairs, we mix the designs where possible. Protection and fit are identical across all designs.
I already bought the glasses in 2026 – can I use them again in 2027?
Yes. With careful storage (dry, dark, flat) Astromo specifies a maximum period of use of three years – so glasses bought in 2026 are still ready for 2027. Important: hold them up to the light and check before every use – even a tiny hole or tear makes the filter unsafe. When in doubt, use a new pair.
Are eclipse safety glasses the same as solar eclipse glasses?
Yes – solar eclipse glasses, eclipse safety glasses or eclipse viewers all mean the same product. What matters is not the name but the standard: only a filter conforming to ISO 12312-2:2015 is approved for looking directly at the Sun. Safety goggles and welding glasses do not meet this standard and are unsuitable.
Can children use the glasses?
Yes – the Astromo glasses are foldable and, thanks to two configurations, fit both children's and adults' heads. Important: always supervise children while observing and never let them remove the glasses while looking towards the Sun.
Can I wear the glasses over my regular glasses?
Yes. Astromo states that the glasses can be worn comfortably over prescription glasses as long as they sit snugly against the face. Thanks to the two folding options they can be adapted to the shape of your face. Make sure no direct sunlight enters the eye from the side past the glasses.
How long may I look through them continuously?
Astronomers recommend a maximum of three minutes at a time, followed by a break. This way you experience the different phases – first contact, maximum, last contact – without tiring your eyes.
Can I look through binoculars or a telescope with the glasses?
Absolutely not! Optical devices concentrate sunlight and melt the filter within seconds. For telescopes and binoculars you need special solar filters mounted IN FRONT of the objective lens.
What if it is cloudy on 2 August 2027?
Clouds weaken the spectacle, but even through thin veil clouds a look through the certified glasses is worthwhile. In dense cloud: live streams from Spain and Egypt (NASA, ESA) show totality in real time.
When is the next solar eclipse after 2027?
On 26 January 2028 an annular eclipse follows over Spain. Switzerland, however, will not see a total solar eclipse again until 3 September 2081 – so 2 August 2027 is the best opportunity here for many years to come.
Are the glasses reusable?
Yes, several times – as long as filter and frame are undamaged and the three-year period of use has not been exceeded. Don't forget the visual check before every use.
- Family event: get several pairs and watch together – children love “looking at the Sun”
- Holiday check: in Spain, Italy or North Africa on 2 August 2027? Pack the glasses flat in your suitcase – they will be scarce locally
- Shadow projection: hold a sieve or perforated paper in the Sun – the spots of light on the ground show the “bites” out of the Sun as crescents
- Build a pinhole camera: a hole in one piece of cardboard, catch the image on a second – safe and fascinating for children
- Check the weather: from late July 2027 follow the forecast for your location and move to a clear spot if necessary
- Enjoy the morning: with the maximum at 11:07 am the eclipse fits perfectly into a holiday morning – snacks out, glasses on
- NEVER look directly at the Sun without certified glasses – not even during maximum coverage
- Sunglasses, smoked glass, welding glass, exposed film: all UNSUITABLE
- Check the glasses against the light before every use – no holes, no tears
- Do not look through optical devices (binoculars, telescope, camera, smartphone) without a special filter
- Maximum three minutes at a time, then take a break
- In case of any visual disturbance, look away immediately and consult an ophthalmologist
