Behind every compartment lies a whole pair of socks rather than a piece of chocolate, which is why the run is short. Start on 1 December and you finish on the 12th; begin on 13 December and the last door falls on Christmas Eve.

Both work, because the compartments are numbered 1 to 12 but not dated. That also makes the box a gift outside the run-up to Christmas, for example for a Secret Santa.

The long pairs are the bolder ones: Darth Vader's helmet stretches across the whole foot, R2-D2 stands on bright blue among comic-book sounds, and one pair gathers several helmets into a scattered pattern. The logo and the Imperial emblem sit on black, discreet enough for the office. The short pairs are more playful, from Boba Fett's helmet on muted green to Stormtroopers in light and dark; every motif is knitted in rather than printed on, so it cannot flake off.

38-45 is a generous span and the socks are knitted for it: cuff and foot give way, so the same sock neither slips on a size 39 foot nor pinches on a size 44 one. From shoe size 46 upwards it gets tight, and another model will suit you better.

Decide the starting date first: from 1 December the calendar ends on the 12th, from 13 December on Christmas Eve. When giving it away, leave the box closed, because opening it compartment by compartment is half the fun.

Wash the socks at 30 degrees in a laundry bag so the knitted-in motifs stay sharper for longer, and keep them out of the tumble dryer: the cuffs hold their tension far longer drying in the air. The ankle socks are meant for trainers, the crew socks also work with boots.
