This Christmas mug looks like an ordinary piece of festive china at first glance, but it keeps something back: a modelled gingerbread man lies on the base and comes into view as the coffee or tea goes down. The outside is cream white with fine speckles and red dots, and the handle is striped in red and white like a candy cane.
The little figure wears a red bow tie, green buttons and a rim of white icing, the way a freshly decorated biscuit looks. The mug belongs to the Surprise range, which also includes a mug with a hidden penguin and one with a hidden elephant, and it comes from the Sass & Belle Christmas collection. As a gift it explains itself the moment someone reaches the bottom.
When you pour, all anyone sees is a festive mug. The gingerbread man only shows up as the level drops: red bow tie, green buttons, white icing rim. Because he is modelled rather than printed, he looks like a biscuit someone left behind at the bottom.
That makes it a talking point in the office kitchen or at the family breakfast table. Most people only notice halfway through the first cup that someone has been waiting down there.
The mug is made of 100% porcelain. The outside is cream white with fine speckles and red dots, while the striped handle picks up the candy cane theme and signals from across the room that this is a Christmas piece.
- Material: 100% porcelain
- Dimensions including handle: 12 cm long, 7.5 cm wide, 8.5 cm high
- Modelled gingerbread man on the base of the mug
- Cream white outside with fine speckles and red dots
- Handle striped in red and white like a candy cane
- Part of the Surprise mug range from the Christmas collection
At 12 cm long including the handle and 8.5 cm high, it stays within the familiar proportions of a classic coffee mug.
The surprise mug is for anyone who likes Christmas on the playful side: fans of gingerbread and Christmas biscuits, collectors of seasonal china, and people who enjoy catching others out with a small joke. It works as a gift during advent, for St Nicholas, for a Secret Santa round at work or as something to bring along to a Christmas dinner. Because it is not personalised and still has a story to tell, it lands well even with people you do not know very closely.
If you are passing it on, say nothing about the base. The moment the other person spots the figure for the first time is part of the present, and in a Secret Santa pile it is a gift that needs no long explanation.
If you have several people to buy for, combine it with another mug from the Surprise range, for instance the one with the hidden penguin or the hidden elephant. That gives you a small set for a team or a family. During advent the mug also looks good next to the biscuit plate and sits happily alongside the rest of your red and white Christmas china.
What is special about this mug? A modelled gingerbread man sits on the base of the mug. He becomes visible as soon as you drink the mug empty.
How big is the mug? Including the handle it measures 12 cm long, 7.5 cm wide and 8.5 cm high.
What is the mug made of? It is made of 100% porcelain.
Does it work as a gift? Yes, it is a Christmas piece and suits advent, St Nicholas, Secret Santa or an office present.
Are there other mugs in this range? Yes, the Surprise range also includes a mug with a hidden penguin and one with a hidden elephant.
