Kids' 3-Minute Tooth Brushing Sand Timer

Turn it over, stand it up, start brushing: that is all the operation this timer needs. The sand falls from the upper chamber into the lower one in 3 minutes, and the child can see the whole time how much is left. That takes the argument about duration out of the bathroom, because the sand sets the time rather than a parent. No power, no batteries and no app are involved, and there is no beep to startle a younger child.

Since the 3 minutes are fixed, the time cannot be adjusted. If a child stops early, the upper chamber shows it straight away. And if you let the timer run twice, you get six minutes, for example split between the upper and lower teeth.

The hourglass has a colourful design so that it stands out in the bathroom and children reach for it by themselves. It is made in China and carries the CE marking.

• Running time: 3 minutes
• Available in 4 different colours
• Supplied in a random colour, no colour choice
• CE marking
• Made in China
• Recommended for ages 3 and up

Recommended for ages 3 and up: at that age children already join in with brushing, but they quickly lose any sense of how long they have been at it. A sand timer gives them a reference point they can watch themselves, and it saves parents from reminding them over and over.

In dental practices and nurseries it is a popular giveaway for children, because it fits the subject and needs no explanation. Tucked into a party bag or added to a new toothbrush, it is the kind of present that actually gets used day to day.

Let the child do the turning, so that starting it becomes a small ritual of its own. Because the timer works without a button and without a sound, no explanation is needed: sand at the top means keep brushing, sand at the bottom means done.

With siblings, one timer per child is worth it, so nobody has to wait for someone else's three minutes to finish. Different colours cannot be promised, as every delivery is random and colours may repeat. If you are giving several as presents, wrap them individually, together with a toothbrush or a card.

How long does the timer run? The running time is 3 minutes. You can turn it over again straight away.
