Reusable Soy Sauce Handwarmer

Anyone who has opened a sushi box knows the shape: a little fish with a red cap at the head end. Here the body is black and golden lines trace the scales, the fins and the eye. There is no soy sauce inside, the bottle shape is purely for the look, and that is where the joke sits. What you hold looks like the bottle from the take-away counter, but it turns warm.

To start it off, give the handwarmer a short bend. That snap releases the heat, and you can close your fist around the fish or let it disappear into a jacket pocket. Once it has cooled down, put it in a pan of boiling water for about 5 minutes. After that it can be snapped again and the cycle starts over.

It is handy when you are out and about: on the way to work, at the side of a pitch, at a Christmas market or waiting for the bus.

The handwarmer is made of PVC and measures 13.5 × 6.3 × 2 cm. At 54 g it weighs next to nothing, flat enough for a coat pocket and big enough to hold in a whole hand.

• Reuse: about 5 minutes in a pan of boiling water
• Material: PVC
• Dimensions: 13.5 × 6.3 × 2 cm

Take two fish if you want both hands warm, and snap the second one only when you need it. Before a winter walk, slip the warmer into your jacket pocket so you can reach it quickly even with gloves on. To refresh it, all you need is a pan of boiling water and about 5 minutes.

The box with its viewing window is worth keeping for gifting: the gold cord lets you hang the handwarmer on the tree, on an Advent wreath or from the handles of a gift bag, without extra wrapping. Pair it with sushi ingredients or an Asian cookbook and the little token turns into a gift set. For an office Secret Santa, a birthday or as something to bring along to a sushi night, the fish is quickly to hand.

How do I activate the handwarmer? You give it a short bend. That snap releases the heat.

How do I use it again? Put it in a pan of boiling water for about 5 minutes, then it can be snapped again.

How big is the fish? It measures 13.5 × 6.3 × 2 cm and weighs 54 g, so it sits in one hand and fits a jacket pocket.

Does it contain real soy sauce? No. The warmer only has the shape of a soy sauce fish bottle, there is no sauce inside.

Does it work as a small gift? Yes. It comes in a box with a viewing window and a gold cord, ready for Secret Santa, Christmas or a birthday.
