The Mama mug is a handmade stoneware mug, shaped in a small pottery in Portugal. On the outside it carries the word Mama as a blind embossing, with a small pressed heart above it. This stoneware mug has no handle, so you hold it in both hands, which makes it a calm companion for coffee, tea or hot chocolate.
The design stays simple and minimalist. The upper part is glazed in white and runs through with fine dark speckles, while the lower part keeps its natural beige tone. Because every mug is made individually by hand, each one is a single piece with its own character in shape and glaze.
Every mug is shaped, fired, stamped, sanded, glazed and fired a second time by hand. That long route through many steps is what gives the mug its character, and the reason why no two pieces turn out exactly alike.
In practice this means the embossing is sometimes deeper and sometimes softer, the height varies a little and the sides are not machine-straight. These are not flaws but traces of handcraft, and they are exactly what people who like handmade ceramics look for.
With a capacity of about 320 ml the mug holds a large coffee or a generous tea. Measuring about 8.5 to 9.5 cm in height with a diameter of about 8.5 cm, it stays handy on the breakfast table and on a desk.

The mug is made for mothers and mothers-to-be, given by the children, by a partner or by the whole family. It suits Mother's Day, a birthday, the birth of a child and Christmas, and works just as well as a thank you for no particular reason.
Because the Mama mug keeps its decoration quiet, it fits into any kitchen, from pale and plain to colourful and mixed. Anyone who likes handmade ceramics with character will happily leave it on the shelf when it is empty too.
In the brand photographs the mug also appears holding a small bunch of flowers. That is a nice idea for days when it is not in use as a drinking vessel: a few short-cut stems are enough.
As the mug is dishwasher safe, you can simply add it to the load after breakfast. It also takes the microwave and the oven, so coffee that has gone cold can be warmed up in the mug itself. Left out on an open shelf rather than inside a closed cupboard, the blind embossing shows up better.
When you give it away, it is worth not handing it over empty: tuck in a favourite tea blend, coffee beans or a few chocolates and turn the embossing to the front. For a joint family present, each child can add a small item.
