This detective advent calendar turns the run-up to Christmas into a case for four: Justus, Peter and Bob investigate, and you are the fourth detective. Behind the 24 doors there are gimmicks for fans of the German book series Die drei ???, plus a colour-illustrated booklet with a detective story and puzzles. The title on the box reads Der Fluch des Feuervogels in 24 Rätseln. Story and puzzles are in German.
The case starts at the theatre: during the premiere of the play Der Feuervogel, the three investigators witness a mysterious theft of valuable jewellery. The story was written by Ulf Blanck, the author of Die drei ??? Kids. There is no chocolate inside; the doors hold material for investigating, so the calendar is a hands-on game rather than a sweet treat.
Over 24 days the story moves on chapter by chapter. You read the chapter of the day and solve the puzzle that goes with it. The solution picture tells you which door comes next, so nobody has to guess.
At the same time the investigation wall grows: a pinboard that fills up with clues step by step until it is clear who took the jewellery. The back of the box puts it plainly: become the fourth detective and help Justus, Peter and Bob with their enquiries.
The calendar holds 24 gimmicks for Die drei ??? fans and the colour-illustrated booklet with the story and the puzzles. The packaging shows examples such as the cult magnet Vierter Detektiv, a prism, coloured stones and material for the investigation wall. What sits behind the remaining doors stays a surprise until you open them.

As a present it fits Advent, St Nicholas Day or Christmas, opened well before the holiday itself. Because it contains small parts, it is not for toddlers.
The pen and the adhesive tape are not included, and nor are the other everyday household materials. Put them ready before the first door is opened so the investigation starts without interruption.
Since the solution picture reveals the next door, it pays to work through in order and leave the other doors shut. If you are giving the calendar as a present, hand it over before 1 December so the first chapter can be read on time. And because the story and the puzzles are in German, it suits children who enjoy reading that language.
